BESTI visited in May when the weather was nice. A place that appeared in the Conan movie. It is a star-shaped park and admission is free, but there is a fee for the observatory. I definitely recommend going there once.
You can see a fantastic night view,
Goryokaku Tower Observation Deck
Goryokaku Tower is a tower built at the end of the Edo period. The unique star-shaped Goryokaku Park can only be seen by climbing up high. Especially in spring, when cherry blossoms are in full bloom, you can see a panorama filled with pink, and in winter, you can see white snow falling softly.
A central garden (atrium) has been created on the first floor of Goryokaku Tower. You can enjoy coffee and even light snacks in a place full of plants. The observatory is divided into the first and second floors! The first floor observatory is located 86 meters above the ground and you can purchase souvenirs. And the second floor observation deck is located at a whopping 90m above the ground, so you can see Kyoryokaku Park at a glance.
Wish upon a star
The most memorable view from Goryokaku Tower is the Goryokaku Castle. Goryokaku Castle is Japan's first Western-style fortress built in 1864 to defend the northern part of the country. When viewed from the tower observatory, it is shaped like a perfect star. It is said that Japanese people make wishes while looking at this view from here.
Everyone, make a wish, it might come true.
A tall tower and observatory
Goryokaku Tower was first completed in 1964. It was refurbished and reopened in its current form in 2006, and is the tallest building in Hagagodate at 107m.
From the 86m and 90m high observatories on top of the tower, you can enjoy spectacular views of Mt. Hakodate, the Tsugaru Strait, and the Yokotsu Mountains to the north. In the evening, you can even see the sunset and the city lights up.
There are shops and restaurants on the first and second floors of the tower, and you can see the history of Goryokaku in the exhibition hall on the upper observatory.
Hakodate dyed in pink
The best time to visit Goryokaku Tower is during the cherry blossom festival. At this time, you can see the cityscape colored in pink by about 1,600 cherry trees. Goryokaku Park is Hakodate's best spot for cherry blossom viewing, so after enjoying the view from the tower, we recommend going down to enjoy the cherry blossoms.
