The History of Sainte-Chapelle

Built by Louis IX, Sainte-Chapelle was constructed in just seven years, from 1242 to 1248. A prime example of Gothic style, it was originally built as a royal chapel for the king and his family.

The interior of Sainte-Chapelle is divided into the first and second floors. The chapel at the entrance is for the general public, while the second floor, accessible by stairs, was used by the royal family or privileged classes.
