Splendid Private Collection
The Mauritshuis Museum was built in 1681 by Johan Maurits, the Governor-General of the Netherlands, to house his private collection. It was sold to the Dutch government in 1822 and opened as a national art museum. It currently houses approximately 800 works. You can admire works by leading Dutch Golden Age painters such as Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Frans Hals, as well as works from other European countries, including Flanders, Germany, and Italy.
