The Rebirth of an Old Prison
Old Melbourne Gaol
Located in downtown Melbourne, where modernity and history coexist, Old Melbourne Gaol has shed its symbol of past oppression and despair and has now become a living witness to history and a cultural space. In the mid-19th century, this place, which housed notorious criminals, has become a space that provides deep reflection on past lives, justice, and human nature. The tightly closed doors and high walls still convey a cold air, but you can experience various cultural experiences along with the lessons of history.
Where the most hangings were carried out,
A glimpse into the lives of prisoners
From 1842 until its closure in 1929, Old Melbourne Gaol held the dubious record of being the most hanged place in Australia, with 133 executions. Among them was bushranger Ned Kelly, Australia’s most notorious criminal and folk hero. Walk through the prison’s walls and experience the fear, despair and yearning for freedom they must have felt.
