Set against the backdrop of majestic Mount Fuji and Lake Ashi, Hakone-en Aquarium is renowned as the highest aquarium in Japan, at 723 meters above sea level. Divided into three main sections—the Saltwater Pavilion, the Freshwater Pavilion, and the Baikal Seal Plaza—you'll encounter approximately 32,000 marine creatures representing 450 species. The Baikal Seal Plaza, in particular, is a symbol of Hakone-en Aquarium and one of the few places in Japan where you can see Baikal seals, native to Russia. While Hakone-en Aquarium may not be as large as it might be called a "mountain aquarium," its high elevation offers a unique aquarium experience.

Hakone-en Aquarium
Hakone-en Aquarium, located 723 meters above sea level on the shores of Lake Ashi, is Japan's highest aquarium. The Seawater Hall, a 7-meter-tall outdoor aquarium, is particularly notable. Hakone-en Aquarium boasts 450 species and 32,000 fish from around the world. Stepping outside the aquarium building, you can admire the majestic Mount Fuji and the beautiful Lake Ashi from this elevated vantage point.
Baikal Seal Plaza
Baikal seals are rare freshwater seals found only in Lake Baikal, Siberia, Russia. These seals can be seen in very few places in Japan, and Hakone-en Aquarium is a prime example. Their large, round eyes and adorable appearance make them a popular photo spot. Furthermore, visitors can even feed the seals themselves (for a fee), making this a popular attraction every year. Come see the Baikal seals, the "icon" of Hakone-en Aquarium, up close.
