Kumamoto Mini Tatami-Making Experience

This workshop teaches you how to make tatami, a symbol of traditional Japanese lifestyle, in Kumamoto. The instructor will explain the history of tatami, the story of Kumamoto's igusa, and the manufacturing process, allowing you to understand the materials and traditions. Then, you'll weave and finish a 25×21cm mini tatami using high-quality igusa. Even beginners will be guided step-by-step, making it a breeze. The completed mini tatami can be used as an interior mat to display figures, vases, or other small items, making it a memorable souvenir that will last a lifetime. After the workshop, you'll receive a igusa coaster, Japanese tea, and light refreshments, making this a truly enriching 90-minute program where you can enjoy making, learning, and tea time all in one.

• The Tale of the Tatami and the Igusa
  Learn about the history and cultural significance of tatami mats, the process by which Igusa tatami mats were made, through slides and videos, and even touch the actual materials.

• Choosing a Tatami Border
  I choose and select the fabric border that will be wrapped around the mini tatami I will make.

• Making a mini tatami mat
  Make your own mini tatami (tea mat) with your own hands.

• Green tea time
  Take a break and enjoy a cup of green tea.

• Wrap-up & Souvenirs
  You can take the completed mini tatami home as a souvenir.
