About the Host

Highlights

This is a handcrafting experience where you make your own mini tatami mat using igusa, a specialty of Kumamoto. The craftsman will explain the history of tatami, its cultivation, and the manufacturing process, and will guide you step by step, so even absolute beginners can focus on creating their own unique piece in 90 minutes. The completed mini tatami measures 25×21cm and is perfect as an interior mat for vases or small items, making it a great place to take home and reminisce about the past. After the experience, you will receive an igusa coaster as a gift, along with Japanese tea and light refreshments, making it a simple yet luxurious experience where you can enjoy the craft, its fragrance, and its taste all at once.

Program

My own mini tatami made by hand

This workshop teaches you how to make tatami, a symbol of traditional Japanese lifestyle, in Kumamoto. The instructor will explain the history of tatami, the story of Kumamoto's igusa, and the manufacturing process, allowing you to understand the materials and traditions. Then, you'll weave and finish a 25×21cm mini tatami using high-quality igusa. Even beginners will be guided step-by-step, making it a breeze. The completed mini tatami can be used as an interior mat to display figures, vases, or other small items, making it a memorable souvenir that will last a lifetime. After the workshop, you'll receive a igusa coaster, Japanese tea, and light refreshments, making this a truly enriching 90-minute program where you can enjoy making, learning, and tea time all in one.
