Walk the coastal clifftop trail at Godley Head, about 30 minutes from central Christchurch, with a local guide. Follow the crater rim of the ancient volcano that formed Banks Peninsula and take in sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, Lyttelton Harbour and the surrounding coastline. Along the way, you will also see historic sites such as World War II coastal gun emplacements and Scott's Antarctic hut. Choose between a half-day walk of about 4 km or a full-day walk of about 9 km, in a small group or as a private tour, and enjoy a picnic lunch overlooking Boulder Bay on the full-day tour.

Depart from Christchurch and
walk the Godley Head coastal trail
Depending on your option, depart from central Christchurch or Lyttelton Harbour and travel to Godley Head by van. Full-day guests start the day with a complimentary hot drink in the seaside suburb of Sumner.
Your experienced local guide shares stories about the volcanic origins of Banks Peninsula, the history of Christchurch and the wildlife of the area. The trail is a well-maintained easy-to-moderate coastal track with some gentle hills and uneven ground.
Take in sea cliff views along the crater rim

After a safety briefing at Te Onepoto (Taylors Mistake), walk the Awaroa/Godley Head loop. Enjoy dramatic sea cliffs and open views of the Pacific Ocean and Lyttelton Harbour, with time to rest and take photos at a panoramic viewpoint. Look out for native seabirds along the rugged coastline.
Explore WWII gun emplacements and historic sites

Along the trail, pass the sites where coastal defence guns were stationed during World War II, as well as Scott's Antarctic hut. Your guide explains the history and stories behind each place.
Enjoy a picnic lunch at Boulder Bay on the full-day tour

The half-day tour covers about 4 km and includes light refreshments. The full-day tour covers about 9 km and includes a gourmet picnic lunch overlooking secluded Boulder Bay, a beach accessible only on foot. After the walk, relax on the drive back to your starting point.
