and travel north along the Canterbury coast
After pickup from a designated hotel in central Christchurch, head to Kaikoura in a Mercedes Sprinter with air conditioning, Wi-Fi and USB chargers. Your local Kiwi guide provides lively commentary in English throughout the day.
On the way, take a 15-minute break for photos at Cheviot and watch fur seals resting on the seaside rocks as you pass the Hundalee Hills. When you arrive in Kaikoura, a town set between snow-capped mountains and turquoise sea, you will have lunch.
Head out to sea on a whale watching cruise
Board the whale watching vessel with an expert naturalist guide and spend about 2 hours on the water. The Kaikoura Canyon, a deep underwater trench, creates nutrient-rich waters that attract a remarkable variety of marine life all year round.
Look for resident sperm whales, migrating humpback whales, orcas and five species of dolphins. The crew uses hydrophone technology to track underwater sounds and find where the whales are.
Return via Gore Bay and Waipara
On the way back, stop at Gore Bay and the Cathedral Cliffs viewpoint for about 5 minutes each to take photos. Time permitting, enjoy about 30 minutes of wine tasting at a family-run vineyard in Waipara.
The tour ends back in Christchurch at your drop-off point.
