This was a fantastic tour. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. She painted a clear and sometimes harrowing picture of life in 19th century Toronto. However, she imbued her presentation with deep respect for the many women who raised their families and cared for parents through sex work. There were lots of humorous stories and links through ancestry to people still living and this added extra interest and fun to the tour. As Irish tourists, we really appreciated the extra stop she made to the Irish quarter to which 40,000 of our citizens fled in the late 1840’s to escape the Great Famine in Ireland. I would highly recommend this tour for a fun and educational night out. Special thanks to the wonderful guide LK

This tour was unique and very informative about brothels in historic Toronto. Our tour guide was LK, a history professor who was very knowledgeable, engaging, and passionate about the subject. Highly recommend!

Highlights

This adults-only walking tour follows the hidden history of the sex trade in 19th-century Old Toronto. A history professor guides you to hidden spots in the Old City, sharing stories of the scandals, secrets and spy rings that rocked the city, as well as the sex workers and businesswomen who helped build it. Based on stories of 100 brothels uncovered through 10 years of archival research, you'll also learn about the secret rules, architecture and fashion of the time. The route starts and ends at St. James Park and takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.

This English-guided tour starts at the black fountain in St. James Park and explores the Old City for about 1.5 to 2 hours. Your guide, a history professor, shares true scandalous stories of 19th-century Toronto that aren't part of the "official" history, and the tour returns to the starting point at the end.

Based on 100 brothels in 19th-century Toronto located through 10 years of archival research, learn the original secret rules and regulations for running a brothel. Hear stories about the women who worked there, their clients and how they spent their money, and find out why sex workers and madams were considered essential workers.

Through forgotten streets, old photographs and hands-on artifacts, follow the stories of the clients, scandals and spy rings that made Old Toronto notorious. You'll also explore the history of architecture and fashion related to the trade.
