Shanghai Yu Garden & City God Temple Cultural Guided Tour

Discover the philosophy of Chinese gardens
at the Ming-dynasty Yu Garden

The tour begins at Yu Garden, a masterpiece of Ming-dynasty garden design created more than 400 years ago. Stroll past carefully arranged rockeries, shimmering ponds, pavilions and winding corridors for a rare glimpse into the life of China's scholar-officials.

Your guide explains the harmony of yin and yang, the symbolism of each plant and rock, and how the garden served as a retreat for meditation and literary pursuits. Learn about the Confucian order reflected in the layout, the Taoist appreciation of nature in its organic design, and the Buddhist elements of reflection found throughout.

Visit the City God Temple,
a Taoist temple where locals still pray

The nearby City God Temple is a living Taoist temple where locals still come to pray and offer incense. Walk around the lively temple area, admire the traditional architecture and see the spiritual life of Shanghai residents up close.

Enjoy Chinese tea culture and a rooftop photo spot

For a deeper cultural experience, you can add a tea session at a traditional teahouse. Savor teas such as Longjing (Dragon Well) or Tieguanyin while learning about the history and etiquette of Chinese tea culture.

You can also take unique "walking on the roof" photos against the traditional architecture of Yu Garden. Your guide never rushes, and a personal audio receiver lets you hear the commentary clearly even in crowded spots.

※ You will spend about 30 minutes each at Yu Garden (Yangshan Hall) and the City God Temple.
