The Ainu ancient ceremonial dance is a traditional performing art handed down from ancient times to show respect and gratitude to the kamuy (gods) and ancestors, and you can enjoy on stage the songs and dances sung in rituals and daily life. The performance of about 30 minutes centers on the inaw, a ritual tool that connects the Ainu and the kamuy. The Akanko Ainu Theater "Ikor", whose name means "treasure" in the Ainu language, is an indoor theater and a hub for sharing Ainu culture. The Ainu ancient ceremonial dance consists of songs and dances that have been performed since ancient times during rituals, when relatives and friends gathered, and even while working every day. It expresses joy and sorrow through the body, and is both something people enjoy themselves and an expression of respect and gratitude to the kamuy (gods) and ancestors.
Songs and dances unfold around the ritual tool "inaw"
The performance centers on the inaw, a ritual tool that connects the Ainu and the kamuy. The inaw is said to be a kamuy itself, an offering given when a kamuy appears in this land, and a gift sent to the world of the kamuy. You can enjoy about 30 minutes of songs and dances performed with the inaw, offered as a bridge between the Ainu people and the kamuy.
Visit the theater at a performance time
The Ainu ancient ceremonial dance is performed three times a day at 11:00, 13:30 and 20:00 from May 1 to October 31, and once a day at 20:00 from November 1 to April 30. On the day of your visit, show the QR code to the staff at the ticket exchange counter of the theater and enter.
