Shaxi Ancient Town and Shibaoshan

This full-day private tour takes you by private car to Shaxi Ancient Town and Shibaoshan. Choose a round trip back to your starting point or continue to Lijiang after the tour from Dali, with either a car only or a car with a tour guide (Chinese or English). The itinerary can be customized for your group.

Walk among Bai houses and Sifang Street

Most buildings in Shaxi are traditional Bai houses featuring black tiles, white walls, upturned eaves and dougong brackets. Cobblestone lanes are lined with shops selling handicrafts, traditional clothing and local snacks, and Sifang Street at the heart of town was once an important market on the ancient Tea Horse Road.

Many Bai residents still live here following traditional customs. You can also visit Xingjiao Temple, known as one of the relatively well-preserved Bai temples.

Taste Shaxi snacks and Pu'er tea

Try the crisp, sweet Shaxi cake made from flour, eggs and sugar, along with local snacks such as chicken rice noodles, rushan (milk fan cheese) and bean flour dishes. Teahouses around town serve authentic Yunnan Pu'er tea. Food and drinks are not included.

Visit the grottoes and cliffside temple of Shibaoshan

About 12 km from Shaxi, Shibaoshan is a 1,300-year-old scenic mountain area known for red Danxia sandstone landforms and rock carvings from the Nanzhao and Dali Kingdom eras. Shizhongshan Grottoes hold more than 130 carved statues depicting the Nanzhao royal court, palace life and Buddhist figures such as Guanyin.

Baoxiang Temple, a Song dynasty complex built into the cliffs, features suspended walkways, and wild macaques roam the area freely. Scenic trails link red sandstone formations shaped like lions, elephants and bells.
