On this 4-hour hands-on tour, you'll learn Vietnamese survival phrases with a local mentor and put them to use right away. The focus is on doing rather than studying: ordering coffee, getting around, bargaining at the market and chatting at a local eatery. Groups are limited to 5 participants, and you'll receive a digital kit with short videos and key phrases before the tour.

Practice your first phrases at a sidewalk coffee stall

Meet your mentor at a busy sidewalk coffee stall, the true "office" of everyday Vietnamese life. Sip iced milk coffee (cà phê sữa đá) or local tea while watching the street, and learn the etiquette of Vietnamese forms of address. Then use your first five phrases to order a drink from the owner yourself.

Get around the neighborhood your way

Next, choose your favorite way to explore the local area. On a cyclo, practice directions such as left, right and stop to guide the driver; on a public bus, learn how to talk with the conductor. You can also follow your mentor on a rented motorbike or practice small talk in a taxi.

The base price includes walking and bus travel; cyclo, motorbike and taxi fares are paid separately.

Bargain at a traditional market
and finish at a hidden local eatery

At a traditional neighborhood market away from the tourist crowds, you'll start your mission with a small budget in local currency and a "mystery shopping list". Use your new phrases to ask prices, negotiate a small discount and make your purchases, with your mentor right beside you to help.

The challenge ends at a hidden eatery in a quiet alley, where you'll taste traditional street food such as bánh căn or nem nướng and thank the owner with your final phrases. You'll also take home a digital survival card with all the key phrases.
