This 95-minute program at a Japanese culture experience space in Sendai lets you make the high-grade Japanese sweet "nerikiri" yourself and then experience a tea ceremony. Using white and red bean paste made by a long-established shop in Kyoto, you color it and shape 2 kinds of sweets in the form of seasonal flowers and fruits. You prepare tea with single-origin matcha and enjoy it with your own sweets, tasting the balance of sweetness and bitterness. It is a great fit if you want to experience Japanese culture through sweets and tea in one go.
The experience begins with an explanation of traditional Japanese desserts. "Nerikiri" is a high-grade wagashi made by shaping colored white bean paste into seasonal flowers or fruits. Starting with coloring the white bean paste, you make a flower-shaped nerikiri and a "kinton nerikiri" in turn. Choosing colors and shaping the sweets is a great chance to express your creativity.
After a short break, you hear about tea, watch a demonstration of grinding matcha and experience a tea ceremony using Uji matcha. You prepare your own tea with special single-origin matcha, and there is also time for photos.
Finally, you enjoy the sweets you made together with the matcha you prepared. The sweetness of the high-grade white and red bean paste goes perfectly with the bitterness of matcha. After the experience there is time to eat and drink, and you leave the room at around 95 minutes.
