This day tour from Sendai Station takes you by bus and train with an English-speaking guide to Sendai Daikannon and Yamadera (Risshaku-ji Temple) in a single day. Inside the 100 m Sendai Daikannon, see statues depicting the 33 forms of Kannon and 108 Buddha statues across 12 floors, and on clear days enjoy views over Sendai all the way to the Pacific Ocean. In the afternoon, head to Yamadera in Yamagata Prefecture and climb its 1,015 stone steps to feel the calm of this mountain temple. All train and bus fares and admission fees are included, and the tour runs in a small group of up to 15 people.
The tour starts at 9:00 am in front of the Morinosanka stained glass near the West Exit on the 2nd-floor main concourse of Sendai Station. After meeting your guide, take a city bus for about 40 minutes to Sendai Daikannon.
Its official name is Sendai Tendo Byakue Daikannon, named after the white-robed bodhisattva it depicts. In the right hand it holds a wish-granting jewel, and in the left a vase pouring the water of wisdom. On the first floor you can see statues showing the 33 forms of Kannon and the 12 heavenly generals representing the Chinese zodiac. Bring coins if you would like to make an offering to a particular zodiac statue.
After reaching the top, you will walk down past 108 Buddha statues spread over 12 floors, each said to represent a worldly desire that stands in the way of enlightenment. You will spend about 1 hour here with your guide's explanations.
Travel by bus (about 25 minutes) and train (about 70 minutes) to Yamadera (Risshaku-ji Temple) in Yamagata Prefecture. At the foot of the mountain, see Konponchudo Hall, an Important Cultural Property, the statue of haiku poet Matsuo Basho and various temple buildings. Then climb the 1,015 stone steps and take in the calm atmosphere of the mountain temple. You will spend about 2 hours 15 minutes here, including guided time and free time.
Take the train back to Sendai Station in about 67 minutes to end the day. The tour finishes around 4:30 pm.
