Spend about 45 minutes in St. Peter's Basilica, the heart of Christianity, exploring its grand Renaissance and Baroque architecture and masterpieces. Pause in front of Michelangelo's Pietà to take photos.

Visit the papal tombs beneath the basilica

Beneath the basilica are the papal tombs (crypt), where many popes are buried. You can visit them while listening to the audio guide on the basilica's history.

Climb the dome for views over Rome if you wish

If you'd like to climb the dome, visit the basilica interior first, then buy one of two tickets at the ticket office inside the basilica, depending on whether you use the elevator. If you take the stairs, you'll climb at least 320 steps to reach the top. From the top of the dome, Rome and part of Vatican City spread out before you.
