Most visitors to the Tower of London are greeted by a long queue in front of the Jewel House as soon as they arrive. On this tour, a group of up to 20 people enters the fortress before general visitors arrive and watches an opening ceremony that most visitors never know about.

Explore the medieval outer walls and Traitors' Gate

Start outside the fortress walls with an expert guide and walk along the medieval perimeter of the royal fortress built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century. Pass Traitors' Gate, where prisoners once arrived by boat, and walk along the walls facing the River Thames.

Watch the Yeoman Warders' opening ceremony

Before opening, a Yeoman Warder leads the group through a side entrance into the empty inner courtyard. Watch the Yeoman Warders in Tudor dress uniform march across the courtyard and open the fortress gates following a military ceremony that has been carried out for centuries.

Be among the first to see the Crown Jewels

Right after the ceremony, head to the Jewel House and see the Crown Jewels while the rooms are still quiet. Admire the Imperial State Crown, set with more than 2,800 diamonds, and the Sovereign's Sceptre with the 530-carat Cullinan I without the usual crowds.
