Explore Queluz National Palace,
the 18th-century royal summer residence

Queluz National Palace, on the outskirts of Lisbon, was the summer residence of the Portuguese royal family. This Rococo palace was built from 1747 for Prince Pedro (later King Pedro III). With a priority ticket, you can skip the line and head straight in to explore halls that show the shift in style from Baroque to Rococo and Neoclassical. See the Throne Room and Ambassadors' Room where royal celebrations were held

The gilded Throne Room and the mirrored Ambassadors' Room are where the royal family hosted masked balls, concerts and fireworks. You can also learn about the royal stories shaped by scheming relatives and visiting nobles. In the Don Quixote Room, don't miss the circular ceiling. Pedro IV, the first Emperor of Brazil and a key figure in Portugal's transition to constitutional monarchy, was born and later died in this room.

Stroll through gardens filled with fountains and statues

Outside the palace, formal gardens unfold with neatly trimmed hedges, fountains and lead statues made in London workshops. At the heart of the gardens is an azulejo-tiled canal where the royal family once took gondola rides. The restored botanical garden has twice received the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Award, and the gardens are part of the Council of Europe's Cultural Routes.
