The Majestic Azay-le-Rideau Castle in the Loire Valley
Visit Azay-le-Rideau Castle, located near the Loire River in France. It is renowned as one of the most iconic architectural landmarks of the French Renaissance. As a city once inhabited by numerous nobles, the castle's interior is adorned with opulent and exquisite carvings. The English-style gardens are another highlight not to be missed.
A Prime Example of Early French Renaissance Architecture

Azay-le-Rideau Castle, a 16th-century structure, stands as a representative of early French Renaissance architectural style. In the 12th century, the lord, a knight named Ridel d'Azay serving King Philip II of France, erected a fortress here to monitor military movements along the Indre River.
After enduring the Hundred Years' War, the castle fell into ruin. It was later rebuilt in the early 16th century by Gilles Berthelot (c. ?–1529), a wealthy financier under Francis I.
Lavish Interiors Offering a Glimpse into the Life of the Era

The interior of Azay-le-Rideau Castle began to change after Francis I, despite repeated requests from Gilles Berthelot's wife, confiscated the castle in 1535 and bestowed it upon Antoine Raffin, the captain of the royal guard. Subsequently, it was inherited by Raffin's descendants, who infused it with their tastes.
