BESTWhen I came to Yakushima, I always wanted to do the Shiratani Unsuikyo trek. I was excited because it's the backdrop for Princess Mononoke, but I was truly overwhelmed from the moment I entered the forest. Moss covered the rocks and trees, making it feel like something out of a fantasy movie. The guide stopped here and there to tell us about the ages of the trees and tell us stories, making it feel like I was on a journey rather than just walking. The trail wasn't as difficult as I thought, and there were plenty of rest stops, so it wasn't too strenuous. Even after I came down, the smell of the forest and the moist air lingered in my mind! I highly recommend it! 👍
If you dream of a special trip, I recommend the Shiratani Unsuikyo trekking tour, where you can fully enjoy the mysterious nature of Yakushima. You can experience the natural beauty of Japan while exploring the moss-covered primeval forest called the “Forest of Time.”
Shiratani Unsuikyo, located in Yakushima, Kagoshima Prefecture, is a 424-hectare primeval forest with Yakusugi cedar trees that are over 1,000 years old and a moss-covered forest that creates a mystical atmosphere. It is also famous as the setting for Studio Ghibli's animation "Princess Mononoke."
