Highlights
Put on a ninja costume and try about an hour of ninja training at Ninja Cafe Takayama in Takayama, Gifu Prefecture. An instructor guides you in English and Japanese through throwing real iron shuriken, shooting a blowgun (fukiya) and practicing swordsmanship with a replica sword. Inside, historical helmets, swords and tea ceremony utensils are on display, so you can also take souvenir photos in your ninja outfit. The experience runs in small groups of up to 10 people and includes one drink, making it an easy choice for families.

Change into a ninja costume
and start your ninja training
The experience takes place at Ninja Cafe Takayama, near Takayama's old town (Furui Machinami). You rent a ninja costume and spend about an hour training with an instructor in a room displaying historical helmets, swords and tea ceremony utensils. All activities are held indoors.
Throw iron shuriken at a target
Learn how to throw real iron shuriken at a target. The instructor shows you the stance and technique, and children can throw from a spot closer to the target.
Learn ninja skills with a blowgun and sword
Load a dart into the blowgun (fukiya) and blow to hit the target, then practice iai movements with a replica sword. Iai is kata training with a blade and an important part of real ninja training.
Take a break with a drink
One drink is included in the experience. The ninja cafe can also be used as a place to rest while taking photos or traveling around Takayama.
