This 3-hour class lets you learn both samurai swordsmanship and traditional Japanese horseback archery at a real martial arts dojo in Machida, Tokyo. Your instructor, a samurai descendant trained in both disciplines, personally teaches everything from a lecture on the Japanese sword to cutting forms and kengeki sparring. After handling a practice sword in a training uniform, you also shoot arrows with a bow, once the samurai's main weapon. The class follows real training methods rather than a tourist show, offering an in-depth experience of samurai culture.
Program
Learn samurai swordsmanship
and archery at a real dojo
This class takes place at the Toyama-ryu Bizenkai headquarters dojo in Machida, Tokyo, taught directly by an instructor trained in both swordsmanship and traditional Japanese horseback archery. On arrival, you hear a short lecture on the Japanese sword and the history of samurai weapons, then change into a practice uniform. You'll learn how the bow was the samurai's main weapon about 1,000 years ago, the matchlock gun about 450 years ago, and the sword after the civil wars ended 400 years ago.
Learn to handle a sword through iai and kengeki
In the iai lesson, you learn how to handle and swing a practice sword and the cutting forms (kata). In the kengeki lesson, you practice the timing of attack and defense and spar with practice swords. There is also an activity to check your blade line.
Shoot the bow, once the samurai's main weapon
Shoot arrows with a real horseback archery bow and see traditional horseback archery attire from 1,000 years ago up close. You may also get to hold an antique matchlock gun.
※ The class is real martial arts training, not a show, so techniques vary in difficulty.

About a 10-minute walk from JR Machida Station. The dojo is on the 3rd floor. Take the back stairs between the sword shop and the vending machine on the 1st floor up to the 3rd floor.
