This small-group walking tour takes you around Asakusa, the heart of traditional Tokyo, on foot with a local guide for 2 hours. Visit Senso-ji, a temple with more than 1,300 years of history, and the neighboring Asakusa Shrine, and learn in simple terms how to pray and how Buddhism and Shinto relate to each other. Walk through streets with very different atmospheres, from the traditional stalls of Nakamise Street to Denboin Street with its old Edo feel and izakaya-lined Hoppy Street. The tour ends at a viewpoint chosen by the guide, looking out at Tokyo Skytree. With a maximum of 10 people, you can easily ask your guide anything.
Meet your guide in front of the SMBC bank in Asakusa and head to Senso-ji, Tokyo's oldest and most famous temple. As you pass through Kaminarimon with its giant red lantern, hear about the temple's history of over 1,300 years, its founding legend, and the meaning of the lantern and guardian statues.
Walking around the temple grounds, learn about Buddhist rituals such as how to purify yourself before entering sacred spaces, how to pray, and the meaning behind incense and fortune slips (omikuji).
Visit Asakusa Shrine, right next to Senso-ji. Your guide explains in simple terms how Buddhism and Shinto, Japan's two main religions, have coexisted for centuries. You will also learn about concepts such as kami (gods), rituals and festivals, and how religion is naturally part of daily life in Japan.
Nakamise Street, one of the oldest shopping streets in Japan, is lined with traditional stalls selling local snacks, sweets and souvenirs. Get recommendations for snacks you must try and long-loved shops.
Next, browse artisan shops and traditional crafts on quiet Denboin Street, which keeps the atmosphere of old Edo, and see the everyday side of Tokyo on retro Hoppy Street, known for its casual izakaya.
At the end of the tour, move to a viewpoint chosen by your guide to see Tokyo Skytree rising above the old streets. Take photos of the scene where tradition and modernity stand side by side as the tour comes to a close.
