On day 2, wake up at around 4:00 a.m., go to the port and board a traditional wooden begog boat to a local fishing platform called a bagan. The boat ride usually takes more than 1 hour depending on the whale sharks' location and sea conditions. Snorkeling usually starts at around 7:00 a.m., but the time may change with sea conditions and whale shark activity.

Fishing around the bagan naturally attracts fish and plankton, which can also draw whale sharks. The operator does not feed the whale sharks. Your snorkeling is recorded with a GoPro underwater camera, and after snorkeling you enjoy a light breakfast of coffee, tea, bread and fruit on the boat.

Cross from Lombok to Sumbawa by ferry

On day 1, after pickup at Bangsal Port (around 8:30 a.m.), Senggigi (around 9:30 a.m.) or Mataram (around 10:00 a.m.), you travel overland to Kayangan Port. A public ferry crosses to Poto Tano Port on Sumbawa in about 1.5 to 2 hours, and you then continue by road to Labuan Jambu, the starting point of the whale shark tour.

The whole journey takes about 8 to 10 hours or more. Transportation is shared, not private, so you ride with local passengers and the bus may stop often.

Stay overnight in Labuan Jambu

You usually arrive in Labuan Jambu at around 8:00 p.m., check in to the hotel and rest. Labuan Jambu is a remote coastal area with very few accommodation options, so you stay at a basic local hotel (shared twin room) chosen by the operator. All rooms have air conditioning, and breakfast is served at the hotel.
