Starting at the Gateway of India, this small-group tour of up to 8 people takes you through Mumbai's past and present in a single day, from colonial-era architecture to old markets and a fishing village. Your guide, a stage actor trained in storytelling, tells how a cluster of small fishing islands became British Bombay and then today's metropolis. Along with walking, you travel the city like a local by Mumbai's iconic black-and-yellow taxis and a commuter train. On the way, you also taste vada pav and pav bhaji, Mumbai's signature street foods.
Meet your guide in front of the entrance of the Gateway of India at 10:00 to start the tour. The tour follows the flow of time, tracing Mumbai's history from the days when it was a cluster of small indigenous fishing islands, through British Bombay, to today's metropolis. The guides are Mumbai stage actors trained in storytelling.
For about 2 hours, walk through Colaba and the Fort area, seeing Gothic and Art Deco buildings such as St. Thomas Cathedral, Flora Fountain and the University of Mumbai while hearing the stories behind them. At the Oval Maidan you may see locals playing cricket, and you stroll along Marine Drive, the seaside promenade.
Ride a black-and-yellow Mumbai taxi to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Before entering the station, taste vada pav and pav bhaji, Mumbai's most famous street foods, then hop on a commuter train for a short ride like local commuters.
Get off at Sandhurst Road station and head to Chor Bazaar, one of Mumbai's oldest markets. Its narrow lanes full of vintage items, Bollywood posters, antiques and old buildings are great for photos. Then drive along Worli Sea Face past high-rise buildings to the Worli Koliwada fishing village and walk its traditional lanes. From the 17th-century Worli Fort, you can view the Arabian Sea and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. The tour ends at Worli Naka.
