Forests, sunrises and seas of clouds
at Alishan National Forest Recreation Area

The Alishan National Scenic Area spans four areas: Fanlu, Zhuqi, Meishan and Alishan. It is one of Taiwan's best-known mountain destinations, where you can admire lush forests, sunrises and seas of clouds, enjoy tea at tea plantations or visit Tsou indigenous villages.

Meet the Alishan Sacred Tree on the Giant Tree Plank Walk

Alishan has long been home to Taiwan red cypress and Taiwan yellow cypress. Nearly 40 giant red cypress trees line the first and second sections of the Giant Tree Plank Walk, and the Xianglin Sacred Tree, 45 meters tall with a trunk circumference of 12.3 meters and an estimated age of 2,300 years, is a must-see. The mountains are also home to rare ferns and wildlife such as the Formosan rock macaque, Mikado pheasant and Alishan salamander.

The forest railway and the Zhushan sunrise

The forest train in Alishan Forest Recreation Area is beloved by visitors. The Zhushan area is known as an ideal spot to watch the Alishan sunrise.

Seas of clouds in a cool mountain climate

With an average temperature of around 10°C, Alishan is cool and visited all year round. July and August tend to be rainy, and from November to April the northeast monsoon makes it a good time to see seas of clouds and misty landscapes.

Tsou villages, high-mountain tea and local snacks

In Tsou villages you can see thatched-roof houses and the men's meeting house, the Kuba. Thanks to large day-night temperature differences, Alishan is famous for high-mountain oolong and Jinxuan tea, and you can also try local snacks such as sunrise cakes and millet mochi.

Add transport and snack vouchers depending on the option

• Zhaoping/Xianglin Line electric shuttle round trip — Board at the Terminal Station or Visitor Center Station. Get off at Zhaoping Station to walk to the Sister Ponds and cherry blossom trees, or at Xianglin Station (next to Shouzhen Temple) to walk the giant tree trails. The Visitor Center Station to Zhaoping Station is about 2.2 km, about 10 minutes including boarding.
• Zhushan Line electric shuttle ticket — Board at the Terminal Station, Visitor Center Station or Zhaoping Station, stop at Duigaoyue Station and get off at Zhushan Station. Take the return ride according to the timetable. The night stargazing route and early morning sunrise route are not included.
• Alishan tourist bus round trip — Alishan Route A/B buses departing from Chiayi HSR Station Exit 2, Platform 7 or in front of Chiayi TRA Station (08:00-17:00, timetable as posted on site).
• Snack and bento vouchers — Depending on the option, redeem a Fenqihu railway bento (Yahu Villa), sunrise cakes and millet mochi (Alishan Sunrise Shop), or a sunrise cake or tea egg (Sunrise Shop or Ruli Cafe).
