See Eugène Ionesco's absurdist play The Bald Soprano (La cantatrice chauve) at the historic Théâtre de la Huchette in Paris's Latin Quarter. Through the absurd conversations of the Smiths and the Martins, the play playfully dissects 1950s society, and after more than 60 years on this stage it has become a theatre classic. The play is performed in French, but every Wednesday English subtitles are projected live on a screen above the stage, so you can enjoy it without speaking French. It runs exactly one hour with no intermission, making it easy to fit into your evening.
The Bald Soprano is Eugène Ionesco's signature work, portraying the absurdity of 1950s society through the ridiculous conversations of two couples. Once an avant-garde new play, it has been performed for more than 60 years at the historic Théâtre de la Huchette in Paris and is now a theatre classic.
The Smiths are spending a quiet evening at home when, as the clock strikes five, the detective-maid announces the arrival of the Martins. With the young Martins, who may or may not know each other, and knocks at the door that keep coming, strange coincidences and contradictions unfold on a stage full of riddles and paradoxes.
The play is performed in French. The "Show with English subtitles" option is for the Wednesday performances (Wednesdays and Fridays from July 1 to August 28), with English subtitles translated by bilingual theatre professionals shown live on a screen above the stage. You'll get seats from which you can comfortably read the subtitles. The "French show only" option is performed 100% in French without subtitles.
※ The show lasts one hour with no intermission.
