Two French Operas on One Stage
The Opera Australia Orchestra, conducted by Andrea Battistoni, presents a double bill of one-act operas by Poulenc and Ravel in concert. This is a single performance on Friday, 5 February 2027.
Poulenc: La Voix humaine
An approximately 40-minute monodrama led by a single soprano. An unnamed woman makes one final phone call with her lover, whose attentions have turned elsewhere, laying bare her rejection, longing and despair. Opera superstar Anna Caterina Antonacci takes the lead role in her Opera Australia debut.
Ravel: L'enfant et les sortilèges
A dark fantasy opera with a kaleidoscopic score drawing on influences from Wagner to Gershwin. In the midst of a ferocious tantrum, a child lays waste to their room until the objects and animals they have tormented spring to life and confront them one by one. Mezzo-soprano Margaret Plummer sings the role of the Child, leading a cast of outstanding Australian singers.
