Send up Prayer or Blessing Lanterns
up to the Jiufen Sky
Wander through Jiufen’s storied mountain lanes, lantern in hand, as soft crimson light dances on weathered stone paths and whispers blessings into the night. Once born from necessity in the gold mining days—when families hung lanterns to guide weary souls home through unlit alleys—these glowing orbs have since become timeless beacons of safety, reunion, and hope. Today, the red lanterns sway gently above the ancient streets, inviting visitors to join in an age-old ritual: to carry light against the darkness and send heartfelt prayers skyward for a year brimming with good fortune. This enchanting experience includes one lucky lantern to light your way and a mountain city blessing card to keep those wishes close to heart.
A Must-Visit on Your Taiwan Trip:
Jiufen
Jiufen (九份), a picturesque mountain town about an hour from Taipei, invites visitors to wander its labyrinth of narrow alleyways lined with traditional teahouses and glowing red lanterns. As night falls, these lanterns bathe the stone-paved streets in a magical light that feels straight out of Spirited Away. Holding your own lantern, you can stroll through this historic village while wishing for good fortune throughout the year—a tradition rooted in the days when miners hung lanterns to light their way home, now transformed into symbols of hope, reunion, and blessings.
At the Lantern Blessing Area, located just a five-minute walk from the exchange counter in front of the Jiufen Gold Ecological Park, complete your blessing ritual and capture this meaningful experience in photos to share with loved ones.
Wish Lanterns and Blessing Cards
Choose from four wishing lanterns, each color symbolizing a different fortune: pink for love, yellow for wealth, orange for peace, and blue for career success. Bring your chosen lantern to the incense burner in front of the Jiufen Gold Ecological Park’s wishing lantern area, and perform the blessing ritual by walking clockwise around the incense burner three times. Once blessed by the local deities, take your lantern home as a keepsake of good fortune you carry with you!
This special blessing experience also includes a blessing card and a red string. Write your wish on the card, then pass it through the incense burner alongside your lantern before hanging it on the blessing wall—leaving your wish in the care of the mountain city’s protective spirits.
