From Hilo to the Mauna Kea Summit: Encounter a World of Changing Landscapes

Meet your guide in Hilo and begin your journey towards Mauna Kea. Depending on operational circumstances, your Hilo departure may include a visit to Waiānuenue (Rainbow Falls). You'll pass through Liliʻuokalani Park and the Hilo area before heading onto the Saddle Road, which traverses the land between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.

As you journey from lush rainforests to high-altitude volcanic terrain, marvel at the diverse landscapes of the Big Island. You'll stop at the Onizuka Center for International Astronomy Visitor Information Station, located at an elevation of about 2,800 meters. After a period to acclimatize to the altitude, you'll continue towards the summit area.
