My wife and I came to Hawaii for our honeymoon, and we booked the Mauna Kea tour that we had been looking forward to so much. It turned out to be even better than we expected! 🌺✨ All we really needed to bring was some warm clothing. The tour provided everything else we needed, including a warm jacket, pants, boots, water, sandwiches (which were SO delicious!), and hot cocoa. ☕️🥪 Thanks to our amazing guide, James, this became one of the most memorable experiences of our honeymoon. He was incredibly kind and friendly, and he also took such amazing photos of us! 📸 We’re so happy we got to experience Mauna Kea with him. We traveled in a comfortable and clean 8-passenger van, so the ride was relaxing and never felt uncomfortable. We absolutely loved this tour and would happily recommend it to our friends. If you’re visiting the Big Island, especially for your honeymoon, I highly recommend this Mauna Kea tour! ❤️

It was an adventurous day traveling to Mauna Kea Summit for a sunset tour with James. He was knowledgeable, friendly, and professional. We enjoyed learning about the Summit and night sky. The hot chocolate while stargazing was a plus!

My finance and I took the tour with James. He was amazing since the moment he introduced himself to us, had interesting facts to share about Hawaii and even the road, he was kind, funny and a big plus, he is an amazing photographer. We will never forget this experience. Watching the sunset was beautiful but then getting to see those stars was priceless!! Mahalo for everything

Great and memorable experience. Thanks.

Despite storm Lala rendering the summit road unsafe, Chris adapted the tour brilliantly and still gave us a great time with interesting facts and great views of the stars and the moon. Definitely recommend!

Highlights

Witness a breathtaking sunset from the summit of Mauna Kea, nearly 13,800 feet above sea level, and gaze at a sky full of stars at night! Travel to the summit in a 4WD van to enjoy the sunset, then join a professional guide for stargazing at approximately 12,000 feet. Warm clothing and a light meal are provided, and your guide will even take photos of you with the sunset and stars as a backdrop using a DSLR camera, offering them to you for free for an even more special memory.

Program

From Sunset to Stars on Hawaii's Mauna Kea

Meet your guide in Kailua-Kona or Waikoloa and embark on a journey to Mauna Kea aboard a 4WD van. Acclimatize to the altitude at the Onizuka Visitor Information Station, don your provided snow parkas, ski pants, and gloves, then ascend to the summit of Mauna Kea at approximately 13,800 feet.

After marveling at the majestic sunset from the summit, descend to about 12,000 feet for an hour of incredible stargazing. Your guide will share fascinating insights into the cosmos, and you'll have the opportunity for DSLR photos with the sunset and stars. These photos will be provided free of charge after the tour. A light meal is also included, allowing you to comfortably enjoy your evening on Mauna Kea.

Sunset Above the Clouds at Mauna Kea's 13,800ft Summit

After sufficient acclimatization at the Onizuka Visitor Information Center, we'll drive up to the Mauna Kea summit in a 4WD van. We aim to arrive about 60 minutes before sunset, giving you ample time to soak in the surrounding scenery. Witness the spectacular view of the Big Island unfolding above the clouds and the magnificent sight of the sun dipping below the horizon. Your guide will capture stunning photos of you with the sunset as a backdrop using a DSLR camera, ensuring you preserve this special moment on Mauna Kea.

Capture Unforgettable Photos Under a Canopy of Stars

Once the sunset concludes, we'll descend to approximately 12,000 feet for an hour of dedicated stargazing. Your guide will illuminate the night sky with explanations of the stars and celestial bodies visible, making your cosmic journey even more engaging. DSLR photography sessions will also take place with the stars as your backdrop. The captured sunset and stargazing photos are provided free of charge and will be sent to your smartphone at the end of the tour. Please note that the locations and times for sunset and stargazing may vary based on the day's weather and local conditions.
