Follow the Great Alpine Highway
to the Waimakariri Gorge
Depart from your selected pickup point in central Christchurch and cross the Canterbury Plains in a Mercedes Sprinter (or similar) with Wi-Fi and USB charging. Cross braided rivers to reach Alpine Jet Thrills - Canyon Safaris at the Waimakariri Gorge, where you spend about 1 hour relaxing and looking around.
Along the way, your guide shares the history of Arthur's Pass in English. The route was originally used by Māori iwi to trade pounamu (greenstone) and later became known through surveyors such as Arthur Dudley Dobson in 1864.
See Castle Hill limestone
and alpine lakes
After a short photo stop at Lake Lyndon, arrive at Castle Hill and spend about 1 hour walking freely among the limestone boulders. The scenery continues with glacier-formed lakes such as Lake Pearson, rugged mountain ranges, and beech forests.
Visit the Otira Viaduct Lookout
and Arthur's Pass Village
Stop briefly for photos at the Otira Viaduct Lookout, then head into Arthur's Pass National Park. At Arthur's Pass Village, enjoy about 1.5 hours of free time to relax or take a walk. The area is home to the kea, so you may have a chance to spot one in the wild.
Return to Christchurch via
Cave Stream and Porters Pass
On the way back, stop briefly at the Cave Stream Scenic Reserve and take photos at Porters Pass before returning to your drop-off point in central Christchurch.
