From Rotorua: Wai-O-Tapu & Waimangu Geothermal Morning Tour - Small Group

Get picked up in Rotorua
and head to the geothermal sites

Pickup from accommodation in central Rotorua takes place between 8:00 AM and 8:30 AM. During the roughly 30-minute drive through forest and farmland, your local guide explains the area’s unique geological history and natural phenomena.

Watch the Lady Knox Geyser erupt at Wai-O-Tapu

Your first stop is Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland. Walk with your guide for about 1 hour past colorful hot springs and geothermal features such as the Champagne Pool and boiling mud pools. Then drive about 5 minutes to the Lady Knox Geyser and spend around 15 minutes watching the eruption that begins at 10:15 AM.

Walk through Waimangu Volcanic Valley and hear its volcanic story

Next, head to Waimangu Volcanic Valley. Your guide tells you how the 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera transformed the landscape, and you spend about 1 hour walking through the now bush-covered valley to see large hot springs, Frying Pan Lake, and other active geothermal features.

Take a break at the Waimangu café and return to Rotorua

Around 12:00 PM, enjoy a 30-minute lunch break at the Waimangu Volcanic Valley café. Lunch is not included. After the break, you are dropped off at your accommodation or in the city center around 1:00 PM.
