Watch kembu, the traditional sword dance of Japan's samurai class, in an approximately 1-hour performance at the Samurai Kembu Theater in Kyoto's Higashiyama Ward. After the performers introduce the history and techniques of kembu, they present several sword dances along with stories of samurai culture from the 12th to the 19th century. The stage stories come with English commentary, so first-timers can follow along easily. After the show, a mini experience lets you hold and swing a sword yourself.

Learn the history and techniques of kembu
at the Samurai Kembu Theater
When you arrive at the theater, remove your shoes in keeping with local tradition. Once seated, the performers introduce the history and techniques of kembu, followed by several kembu demonstrations accompanied by short stories about samurai culture between the 12th and 19th centuries.
Enjoy both traditional and new-style kembu

You can see kembu in both traditional and new styles. Each performer follows a poem that samurai recited before heading to the battlefield, wielding the sword in intricate movements to portray the scene. Techniques using a folding fan are also performed.
Capture the samurai on camera after the show

When the performers return to the stage after the show, you can take out your camera and photograph the samurai. Please refrain from filming during the performance and take your photos at this time.
Hold and swing a sword yourself

Finally, the mini experience begins. Hold the sword, slowly draw it from its scabbard, and swing it following the instructor's commands, gently at first and then with more power. If time allows, you can also learn how to use an umbrella, an essential item for samurai.
