Tours & activities worldwide.
This small-group tour departs from Osaka and visits the temples and sacred sites of Koyasan in Wakayama Prefecture, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in a single day. Starting at the red Daimon Gate, you visit Danjo Garan, the symbol of Koyasan, and the head temple Kongobuji, and take part in the Goma fire ritual, an ancient Buddhist ceremony. You also walk through Okunoin, lined with about 200,000 gravestones, memorial towers and cedar trees, and visit Niutsuhime Shrine, dedicated to the guardian deity of Koyasan. Departure is guaranteed even for solo bookings.

Meet at the meeting point in Shinsaibashi or Nipponbashi, Osaka, and travel by vehicle to Koyasan. A driver-guide who speaks English, Japanese and Chinese accompanies you, and you can also listen to explanations through an audio guide available in many languages, including Spanish, French, German and Italian.

The journey begins with photos at Daimon, the red gate at the entrance to Koyasan (about 15 minutes). You then spend about 2 hours exploring Danjo Garan, the symbol of Koyasan, and visit the head temple Kongobuji with its large rock garden (about 30 minutes).
For lunch, you can optionally try authentic shojin ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine). Lunch and drinks are not included.

Take part in the Goma ritual, an ancient Buddhist fire ceremony accompanied by chanted mantras and drumbeats. Entry to the Goma ritual is included. At Shojoshin-in, you tour the temple with your guide for about 40 minutes.

Stroll for about 70 minutes through the Okunoin cemetery, lined with about 200,000 gravestones and memorial towers and towering cedar trees. Then see the ornate Tokugawa Clan Mausoleum dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu (about 30 minutes) and visit the vermilion Niutsuhime Shrine, dedicated to the guardian deity of Koyasan (about 30 minutes).
After all visits, you return to Osaka by vehicle, a drive of about 1 hour 30 minutes.
※ Temple admission fees (about 2,200 yen in total) are not included and can only be paid in cash on site.
