Learn sashiko, a traditional Japanese stitching technique, and make your own coaster with geometric patterns. Experienced instructor Jun guides you through the history of sashiko and its basic stitches in English and Japanese. Beginners are welcome, and you take your finished piece home as a special souvenir. Groups are limited to 8 participants, and the venue is wheelchair accessible.

Learn the history of sashiko
dating back to the Edo period
The workshop lasts about 2 hours. Sashiko, meaning 'little stabs' in Japanese, began in the Edo period (1603-1868) as a practical way for farmers and fishermen to reinforce clothing and keep warm, and developed into a craft with unique regional patterns. The session starts with a brief introduction to this history.
Master basic stitches and make a coaster

After the instructor demonstrates the basic stitches, you stitch geometric patterns onto a small item such as a coaster using fabric, needles, thread and other sashiko tools. You also learn about the meaning and symbolism of various patterns.
Take your finished piece home

Take home the sashiko piece you made yourself. In the small shop corner next to the workshop space, you can browse JunAle original goods, sewing kits, hand-dyed threads and clothing.
※ If the minimum of 2 participants is not met, alternatives such as changing the date or a full refund will be offered.
