About the Host

Highlights

In this class, you will experience the samurai spirit by learning kendo from an English-speaking instructor at an authentic kendo dojo in Osaka. Put on a kendo uniform and full protective armor including men, kote, do and tare, and learn basic stances and footwork with a shinai bamboo sword. After learning the basics, try pair practice and a match-style bout following real kendo rules. To finish, take your own samurai photos with swords and props inside the dojo. This program is designed for beginners, so no kendo experience is needed.

Learn kendo and samurai culture
at an authentic dojo

The class lasts about 2 hours and begins with an introduction to the history of kendo, its relationship with bushido, the way of the warrior, and reiho, the etiquette at the heart of Japanese martial arts. Your instructor will explain step by step that kendo is not just about striking, but a martial way that values self-control, mutual respect and personal growth.

Put on a kendo uniform and full armor
and learn the basics

Wear an authentic kendo uniform (dogi and hakama) and full protective gear consisting of men, kote, do and tare to become a kendo player. Holding a shinai (bamboo sword), you will learn basic stances, footwork and safety rules under the guidance of an experienced instructor.

Try pair practice and a match-style bout

Once you have the basics, practice in pairs and then take part in a match-style bout following real kendo rules. Timing and focus matter more than strength, so even complete beginners can enjoy it. If you have martial arts or kendo experience, you can also spar with a skilled kendoka.

Take samurai photos in the dojo

To finish the experience, take your own samurai photos inside the dojo using swords and samurai props. It makes a special memory of your trip to Japan.

※ Children under 5 and adults aged 76 or older can only watch, not take part in the kendo practice.
