This small-group walking tour explores the Umeda area of northern Osaka, rarely covered by regular sightseeing tours, to reveal the city’s history and transformation. Starting in the old alleys of Nakazakicho, which survived wartime bombing, you visit Umeda, the Hankyu Department Store, Ohatsu Tenjin, Kitashinchi and Dojima. With a maximum of 6 guests, you can clearly hear your guide’s background stories and move around easily. Follow the story of how old cemeteries and marshland became the heart of a metropolis and discover another face of Osaka.

From Nakazakicho to Dojima,
walk through northern Osaka’s untold stories
Meet your English- or Spanish-speaking guide at Exit 4 of Nakazakicho Station. During World War II, a third of Osaka was destroyed by bombing, but Nakazakicho survived. Learn how its old nagaya (row house) alleys, once almost abandoned, became the city’s bohemian hub.
See the city’s transformation in Umeda and Hankyu

Trace how Umeda, once forgotten cemeteries and marshland, became Osaka’s main commercial and transportation center. At the Hankyu Department Store, hear how Japanese railway companies changed people’s daily lives nearly a century ago by turning stations into hubs of shopping and dining.
Hear the stories of Ohatsu Tenjin and Kitashinchi

Ohatsu Tenjin is the setting of a tragic love story based on true events that inspired traditional Japanese theater and countless couples. Then walk through Kitashinchi, Osaka’s most upscale entertainment district with hostess bars and fine restaurants, and learn how after-work business deals are made.
Discover Osaka’s merchant spirit in Dojima

Finally, visit the site of the Dojima Rice Exchange, known as the world’s first futures market, and hear about Osaka’s merchant spirit and economic development. The tour ends in Dojima, and your guide walks with you to the nearest station, about 5 minutes away, and explains how to get back.
※ The itinerary is for reference only and may change depending on local conditions.
