Leave San Pedro de Atacama before dawn and head to the El Tatio Geysers on the Andean highlands. In a geothermal field at about 4,300 m above sea level, see up close the steam columns rising from more than 80 geysers. Arrive in the early morning when the steam is at its most active, enjoy breakfast beside the geysers, and on the way back stop at the Putana River to observe the local wildlife and plants. An English- and Spanish-speaking guide accompanies you, and pickup from your accommodation is included for a comfortable trip.
After an early-morning pickup from your accommodation in San Pedro de Atacama, climb through the hills and mountain roads of the Andes to the Altiplano. After a drive of about 1 hour 30 minutes, arrive at El Tatio, about 80 km from San Pedro de Atacama.
El Tatio is a geothermal field of about 10 km² with more than 80 geysers, including fumaroles, boiling mud pools, bubbling pools and springs. The steam is most active between 5:30 and 7:00 a.m., when it can rise close to 10 m. Walk among the many steam columns with your guide and explore the field.
Have a hearty breakfast with the geysers right next to you. "El Tatio" means "the crying grandfather" in Kunza, the indigenous language of the area.
On the way back to San Pedro de Atacama, make a short stop at the Putana River to observe the native flora and fauna. The tour ends at Plazoleta La Apacheta in the center of San Pedro de Atacama.
