Meet your English-speaking guide at the Starbucks next to PizzaExpress near the Gateway of India in Colaba, Mumbai. With the hotel transfer option, a driver picks you up at your hotel and takes you to the meeting point. The tour runs in a small group of up to 8 people, so you can hear the guide's explanations up close.
Cross Mumbai Harbour by ferry
Walk with your guide to the Gateway of India and board the public ferry to Elephanta Island. For about 1 hour, cross the sea while viewing Mumbai Harbour, passing ships and the city's coastline. On arrival, walk for about 30 minutes along a path lined with local shops and stalls to the caves as your guide introduces the island's history and culture.
Explore the Shiva cave temple and the three-faced Sadashiva
For about 1.5 hours, step inside the rock-cut temple dedicated to Shiva and admire towering pillars, intricate carvings and statues. In front of the three-faced Shiva sculpture known as Sadashiva, learn about its symbolism and mythology. Your guide also shares stories of Hindu traditions, Indian history and the ancient artisans who created these works.
Return to the Gateway of India by ferry
After visiting the caves, take the ferry back to the mainland for about 1 hour, enjoying the sea breeze. The tour ends near the Gateway of India, after which you are free to explore Colaba.
