Highlights
Try the "surizuri" woodblock printing step of traditional Japanese ukiyo-e at the Kamigata Ukiyoe Museum near Hozenji in Namba, Osaka. Using the museum's original woodblocks, you layer 3 to 4 colors on high-quality Japanese paper to finish your own ukiyo-e. Choose from beginner, intermediate and advanced courses, guided by an instructor in Japanese and English. Museum admission is included, and you take your finished print home in an original clear file.

Your own ukiyo-e
from original woodblocks
With an instructor's guidance, apply paint to the museum's original woodblocks and rub with a baren to print each color layer onto high-quality Japanese paper. Even first-timers create a unique piece depending on how they apply the paint, use the baren and press.
Choose your course
- Beginner course (3-color print): Print the famous kabuki scene "Kagekiyo and Benkei" in 3 colors. Tue–Sat from 11:30, about 15–30 minutes.
- Intermediate course (4-color print): Print a picture of Hozenji alley and a charming townswoman in 4 colors, including fine stone paving and kimono patterns. Tue–Sat from 14:00, about 30–45 minutes.
- Advanced course (4-color print + bokashi gradation): A challenging 4-color print featuring Hozenji's stone paving and a kabuki beckoning cat, with gradation on the paving and double coating on the cat for depth. Tue–Sat from 15:30, about 45 minutes–1 hour.
Take your work home
Your finished ukiyo-e goes into the museum's original clear file to take home. Admission is included, so you can also enjoy the Kamigata ukiyo-e exhibits before or after the experience.
