This experience, recommended by the WAUG editors, offers a special opportunity to meditate in Zen with Nishida Eitetsu, the 16th chief priest of the Zen temple Jushoin. After the meditation, Eitetsu will guide you through the process of enjoying matcha (powdered green tea) served with traditional seasonal sweets. A photographer will also capture the moment of the experience and send you the photo data as a souvenir.
About the place:
Founded in 1599, Chushoin Temple is one of the 46 temples within Myoshin-ji, the largest Zen temple in Japan, and has a history of approximately 420 years.
Introduction to the garden:
The beautiful garden of this temple, a work of art by the famous 16th century painter Eitoku Kano, has remained unchanged since its founding. The garden shows off different beauty each season, with cherry blossoms in spring, fresh green leaves in summer, autumn leaves in fall, and snow in winter!
About the host:
Nishida Eitetsu -
Nishida Eitetsu is the 16th abbot and served as a government official for 10 years before becoming a monk. Despite undergoing a rigorous three and a half year training period, he is known for his cheerful personality and love of animals.
About Zen and Imje Buddhism:
Zen, a branch of Mahayana Buddhism, emphasizes meditation and direct experience over religious texts. Rinzai Zen, introduced to Japan in the 12th century, is known for its emphasis on sudden enlightenment (satori) through intense practice.
