Highlights

The National Museum of Art, Osaka, one of Japan's four national art museums, focuses on contemporary art from Japan and around the world. Boasting a collection of approximately 8,200 works, it showcases diverse artistic trends across time and national borders.
For this special exhibition, I began with drawings for Mitsuko Tabe's iconic placard work from 1961. This exhibition explores the intersection of individual voices and societal messages, asking what art exists for and to whom it speaks.
Through the works of various artists that embody the meaning of life, dignity, and resistance, this will be an opportunity to look at the relationship between art and the world in a new way.
Book your tickets in advance and take a first step into the questions posed by contemporary art!

Program

Special Exhibition at the National Museum of Art, Osaka
For the Placard

The National Museum of Art, Osaka is hosting two exhibitions: the special exhibition "For Placards" and the permanent exhibition "Collection Highlights." This ticket grants admission to both.

The special exhibition "For Placards" explores how the simple act of writing words on paper or wooden boards and holding them up can transform into a social message. In 1961, artist Mitsuko Tabe wrote "For Placards," exploring the potential of a single placard to transform society. She expressed the will to resist harsh reality and the hope that blossomed within it through art. This exhibition borrows the title of that piece and features seven artists who have explored the themes of "dignity" and "living" in their own lives.

Participating artists: Mitsuko Tabe, Tomoko Ushijima, Rieko Shiga, Shingo Kanegawa, Sawako Tanizawa, Yuki Iiyama, and Yuriko Sasaoka

The permanent exhibition "Collection Highlights" showcases key pieces from the National Museum of Art's collection, along with recently acquired works. From the practices of artists like Paul Cézanne and Max Ernst from the late 19th and early 20th centuries to the works of contemporary artists like Joseph Beuys, Takashi Murakami, and Maria Parra, this exhibition offers a comprehensive overview of the trends and diverse expressions of modern and contemporary art.
