Hawaii Maui Kihei Beginner Surf Lesson

Learn the basics on the beach and prepare for your first wave

Meet your instructor at the surf shop in Kihei, check in, and get your surfboard, water shoes, and SPF 50 rash guard.

Before entering the water, you'll receive safety instructions and basic training on the beach. You'll learn the fundamentals step-by-step, including how to lie on the board, paddle, catch a wave, and pop up to a standing position.

A variety of stable beginner surfboards in different sizes are available, so you can choose one that suits your physique and skill level.

Ride Maui's waves with your instructor

After the basic training, you'll head into the ocean with your instructor to start surfing. In Kihei's waves, which are relatively beginner-friendly, your instructor will teach you how to choose waves and time your ride.

There's no need to stand up perfectly from the start. Your instructor will provide personalized coaching on your stance and timing, allowing you to practice at your own pace. Experience your first surf in Maui with about 2 hours of combined beach and water practice.
