The Trans Alpine train is the highlight followed by the guide explanation of NZ culture about Agriculture farming. It’s very enlightening

Amazing scenery on the train trip across. Our mini bus driver Logan, from Cheeky Kea Tours was really great. We enjoyed the conversation all through the journey. A really engaging genuine guy who was obviously very proud of his country and heritage.

Absolutely fantastic tour! The itinerary was a perfect balance of sight seeing and stops to break up the day. The train was a definite highlight for us, and not to be missed. Shoutout to Joel who was a fantastic tour guide, very engaging and friendly :)

Highlights

This one-way tour takes you from Christchurch over the Southern Alps on the TranzAlpine train, then down the West Coast with a guide to the Franz Josef Glacier region. Enjoy the Canterbury Plains, gorges, and snow-capped peaks from the train, and continue by small-group vehicle from Greymouth. Explore Hokitika township, its driftwood-strewn beach, and the turquoise river of the Hokitika Gorge, passing rainforest and black-sand coastline along the way. Lunch and snacks are included, and the tour ends at your accommodation in Franz Josef.

Program

Cross the Southern Alps
on the TranzAlpine train

Depart from your selected pickup point in central Christchurch and board the TranzAlpine train. For about 5 hours, travel from the Canterbury Plains past braided rivers, dramatic gorges, and snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps to Greymouth on the West Coast.

Meet your guide in Greymouth
and explore Hokitika

In Greymouth, meet your local guide and enjoy lunch for about 1 hour (choice from a set menu). Then spend about 30 minutes of free time in Hokitika for shopping and sightseeing, and see the driftwood-strewn beach and the iconic Hokitika sign.

Walk along the turquoise river
of the Hokitika Gorge

Spend about 1 hour walking freely on the Hokitika Gorge track, admiring the turquoise river and forest scenery. Then make a short photo stop at Lake Ianthe.

Travel the West Coast
to the Franz Josef Glacier region

Head south past lush rainforest, turquoise rivers and lakes, and the rugged black-sand coastline shaped by the Tasman Sea, stopping for photos along the way. Travel in a small group with stories from your local guide, and finish the tour in the Franz Josef Glacier region, surrounded by rainforest-covered mountains and glacial valleys.
