At a blacksmith studio in Kitanakagusuku, Okinawa, make your own outdoor knife using the same traditional process as Japanese kitchen knives. Dressed in blacksmith attire, you'll hammer red-hot steel into a blade, then sharpen and polish it yourself. The instructor carefully explains how to use the tools and stay safe from the start, so even beginners can finish a knife they can actually use. It's a blacksmith experience that is rare even in Japan, and since it takes place indoors, it's perfect for rainy or hot days.

Change into blacksmith attire
and learn traditional forging
When you arrive at the studio, your instructor Daiki, a knife specialist with years of experience, welcomes you. Change into the artisan attire worn by Japanese blacksmiths and learn how to handle the main tools such as hammers, tongs and grinders, along with clear safety instructions.
Next, Daiki explains the traditional techniques used to make Japanese kitchen knives and how raw steel is transformed into a blade at each stage, so you understand the forging process.
Hammer red-hot steel into a blade

Place the raw steel in the furnace and heat it until it glows red, then, following the instructor's guidance, hammer it repeatedly to shape the blade. He shows you the right hammering angle, rhythm and precision, so you can safely experience real forging. After the metal cools, check the shape and trim the rough edges.
Sharpen and polish your own knife

Use whetstones and grinders to sharpen the edge, then polish it to a clean shine, turning your forged steel into a handmade knife. You can take home the finished knife, about 13–15 cm long. The Standard Plan is finished with a leather-wrapped handle, and the Premium Plan with a wooden handle.
You can take photos and videos throughout the process, and at the end you can ask any questions about technique, history or knife care.
