Walk through Pienza,
a Renaissance town in the Val d'Orcia
Meet your guide at Santa Maria Novella train station and set off into the Tuscan landscape by air-conditioned coach with Wi-Fi. The first stop is Pienza, in the heart of the Val d'Orcia. Pope Pius II rebuilt it in the 15th century as an ideal Renaissance city, and its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You stroll the picturesque streets for about 1 hour 30 minutes and can try Pecorino di Pienza, the local sheep's milk cheese.
Montalcino, home of Brunello
Next is Montalcino, a medieval hilltop town famous for Brunello di Montalcino, one of Italy's signature red wines. You walk its historic streets for about 2 hours. If you choose the wine tasting option, you enjoy 1 glass of Brunello di Montalcino and 1 glass of Rosso di Montalcino with cold cuts and cheese.
Monteriggioni, the 13th-century walled town, and the Templar Museum
Continue to Monteriggioni, one of Italy's best-preserved fortified towns. 13th-century defensive walls and towers encircle the town, and Dante mentions these walls in the Divine Comedy. It is also known as a setting of a popular video game. You enter the Templar Museum, which covers the legend of the knights, and see its artifacts. You also climb up onto the walls for views of the area around the town.
The rolling hills of the Val d'Orcia
Before heading back, enjoy the scenery of the UNESCO World Heritage Val d'Orcia. In summer, the green hills turn into golden fields, and the area is known as a setting of the film Gladiator. The tour ends at Santa Maria Novella train station, where you started.
