Kota Kinabalu: Monsopiad Cultural Village Half-Day Tour with Lunch & Pickup

Head to the village of
the legendary warrior Monsopiad

Meet your guide at the pickup point in Kota Kinabalu and travel about 1 hour by van to Monsopiad Cultural Village. The village is named after Monsopiad, a Kadazan-Dusun warrior said to have collected 42 skulls. The tour begins with an introduction to Monsopiad's history and origins, the spiritual world of the Kadazan-Dusun people, and the rituals performed by the bobohizan (priestess) and shamans.

Explore the House of Skulls and the 300-year-old warrior's house

The House of Skulls, the heart of the village, holds sacred relics that tell of Monsopiad and the ancient customs of his people. You will also visit Monsopiad's 300-year-old house and hear about its spiritual relics. Flash photography is not allowed here.

Watch traditional performances and join hands-on activities

Enjoy traditional Kadazan-Dusun music and dance, from rhythmic drumbeats to the bamboo dance, and you can even join in. Try blowpipe shooting, fire-starting, the traditional slingshot and rolling traditional tobacco, and taste Kadazan-Dusun rice wine. If you like, you can also try the local delicacy, butod (sago grubs).

Finish with a traditional lunch and a riverside walk

Enjoy a traditional Kadazan-Dusun lunch made with fresh local ingredients, then walk along the suspension bridge and trails overlooking the river and take photos. After about 2 hours in the village, travel about 1 hour by van back to the pickup point.
