San Pedro de Atacama Tour to Red Stones and Altiplanic and Chaxa Lagoons with Breakfast

Red rocks, high-altitude lagoons
and Chaxa Lagoon in one day

After pickup in San Pedro de Atacama, travel south by van toward the high plateau. Stop briefly at the Tropic of Capricorn for photos, then start the day with breakfast in Toconao.

Next, visit Piedras Rojas, Miscanti Lagoon and Chaxa Lagoon in turn, and finish the tour at Caracoles 600 in San Pedro de Atacama. Throughout the day, a guide speaking English and Spanish explains the history, culture and ecology of the desert.

Walk among the red rocks of Piedras Rojas

Spend about 80 minutes walking with your guide at Piedras Rojas (Red Stones), a striking red rock formation sculpted by nature over centuries. The reddish rocks and lagoon create a unique landscape in the middle of the plateau, and you experience altitudes of up to about 4,200 m.

See the Miscanti and Miñiques lagoons framed by volcanoes

Explore the high-altitude Miscanti and Miñiques lagoons, surrounded by volcanoes and mountains, for about an hour. Take in the deeply colored water and the scenery around it.

The tour also visits the highland village of Socaire, where you learn about local culture, history and the traditional adobe architecture typical of this desert region. Afterward, enjoy a lunch break in a natural setting before moving on.

Visit Chaxa Lagoon in the Atacama Salt Flat

Finally, spend about an hour at Chaxa Lagoon in the Atacama Salt Flat. See the salty crust of the salt flat contrast with the desert landscape, and at certain times of the year you may spot wildlife such as flamingos in Los Flamencos National Reserve.
