A geiko or maiko performs Inoue-style (井上流) Kyomai. Two Kyomai songs are performed over about 15 minutes, usually by one geiko or maiko; on some days, the 3rd and 4th performances may be given by two. Shows start five times a day at 13:30, 14:20, 15:00, 16:00 and 16:30.

From exquisite hand-made Yuzen kimono and Nishijin brocade obi to the personal belongings and makeup used by maiko, a variety of exhibits introduce the world and culture of geiko and maiko. You can also see valuable items such as seasonal kanzashi hair ornaments and black formal kimono rarely seen even in Gion, along with photos capturing the atmosphere of the kagai district.

Discover the world of geiko and maiko

In Kyoto's kagai (花街) districts, women who entertain guests with traditional dance and music at ozashiki banquets and on stage are called geiko (not geisha). Women training to become geiko are called maiko. After the exhibition, you can also visit the museum's Japanese garden, art cafe and museum shop.
